In March 2003, the City of Dawson was sanctioned by the Yukon Territorial Court and directed to construct a wastewater treatment facility based on Dawson’s violation of s. 36(3) of the Fisheries Act which prohibits the dumping of any potentially harmful substance into fish-bearing waters.
The deadline for completion of a wastewater treatment facility is now Dec 31, 2011. There is a risk of additional fines and penalties should Dawson not abide by the requirements of the Court Order for secondary treatment.
Every six months the City of Dawson and Yukon government must appear before the courts to demonstrate progress towards a treatment solution for the city.
