Bulletin Board

From the desk of Catherine Harwood, Senior Advisor and Project Leader

June 1, 2010

The public consultation period under Yukon Environmental and Socio-economic Assessment Act (YESAA) has concluded and the Designated Office has posted the evaluation report on the YESAB Online Registry. It was a positive report and I was pleased to see that it recognizes what we have always believed about the project, that it will provide a long term benefit to the environment. The report covered three main topics including ground water monitoring, sludge being taken to Quigley landfill and considerations for site neighbours during construction activities.

The system we are proposing is a closed system with heavy steel shafts and concrete grout curtains around the steel providing a multi barrier protection from the City’s ground water. There are also environmental protection plans for construction and the operation of the facility and there is on going monitoring of Dawson’s drinking water as well.

Based on the evaluation report, the “Decision Document” will determine the mitigations necessary for this project. The next steps will include obtaining a development permit from the City of Dawson, a building permit from the Yukon government and a water licence from the Water Board. Corix has already been in discussions with the heritage board and has come up with a conceptual drawing that is in keeping the Dawson’s heritage theme. This drawing shows the building as being long and low similar to the old industrial type building from the turn of the century.

With the Decision Document in place, we expect the big drills to arrive in Dawson sometime in May and the actual drilling to begin towards the end of May or beginning of June. Current impacts to the community will include noise from the drilling and welding and standard construction noises, but these will adhere to the City’s bylaws.

The project is proceeding according to plans and we are looking forward to achieving the common goal of having a low maintenance and efficient plant operating by the end of December 2011.
